Ga-ga Over SlumDog

SlumDog millionaire!!!

From the time the movie has released I haven't heard anything else but praise for the movie.A movies truly speaks out about itself, the way its been directed and the way the actors has performed their respective roles.
The much created hype about the movie is what convinced me to see the movie and trust me the time spent in watching the movie was worth it.
It very beautifully shows how Jamal[the main character] relates every situation that has happened in past and gives answer at the game show.

Ne ways iam not here today to give a movie review but to highlight a fact which happened today. Was just going through a new papers and I saw a person talkin crap about the movie.

Ok his exact words were "its a Disgrace to Mumbai" For few sec I thought the printing must have been goofed up and a wrong title would be given to the below matter but it was not the case.

Some how that person overlooked what the movie was based on and he started criticizing about how mumbai is not only about slums and how the movie was a disgrace to mumbai.

I am sure most on us would feel that the locations and the background was very apt to the story line unlike our very own Hindi main stream cinema where the hero heroins go to foreign locations to sing songs and blink of the eye they change clothes and move from one place to other

It made me infuriated. But deep down inside a cord struck me.I had read somewhere that in a survey it was found that most indian tend to highlight the -ve factors more than the positive. At that time it dint make sense to me.

But today when I read this it actually made sense, yes it is true that based on few examples i cant conclude that we think -ve.But if we look at the larger picture we wil find many people who give importance to -ve things.

As the movie name suggests Slumdog Millonaire,it is bound to have more contents about ideas and visuals near slums. Now really was that chap who wrote this comment in the news paper actually expecting that the movie would be shot in places like Colaba or bandra no rite??

Also I dont think a movie will bring disgrace to a city like mumbai.A City which speaks for itself doesnt really need any one else to talk good about it.

well... i've read many comments about the movie and how it shows India just too bad. But then if it was there and if it is changing now, it is an achievement, isnt it? Whats disgraceful in reality?
Especially because the reality seems to be changing?

Rakesh said...

@ lena: to be frank i dont find ne thing which is not happining rite now.All that is shown in the movie is happining in real and i think instead of hidning the truth we mite as well work for its betterment.

This movie is surely a wonderful work. I hold firm the belief that there is more -ve to our life than we actually speak. Infact our problem is that we like to see only the +ve things, because of which we have higher sensitivity to reject the -ves. (incidentally this is also one of the points raised in the movie when Jamal asks Latika why do people what this KBC.)we are a terrible cultural broth.
We seek happiness by flying away into an illusion of happiness through/'created by' our movies. We cannot accept the truth. Dharavi is a real place in the real city where those reality- inspired shots of child molestaion, limb mutilation, alms seekers/child-beggers, cheats, thugs, murders have been taken.
Just that it, a little to far, uphold the indian belief in Fatalism, whereby it as though confirms to us all that " d:it is written"..(the option 'd' of the question "if u suddenly become a millionaire"). It appears that the author, Mr Vikas Swarup, upon whose novel this movie is based, has been an arts or a non-mathematics related student. Actually i feel that this fatalism promotion should not go little over with us Indians, while it is still acceptable to the west which has gone more 'sci-techocratic'. Movies like 'Forrest Gump', depict the invidual's good fate, whereas Slumdog depicts the fate(/the lot) of a whole nation.
But in the end it's still acceptable to me. I hope someday our movie-makers also roll into making flicks on 'probabilitis'(contrasted against Fate) as well.

There's so much media hype surrounding that movie, anything firangi made attracts us.. I find Saalam bombay More interesting and celebrating the spirit of mumbai better than SDM...
